Betting Baseball: Struggling Lincecum Faces the Braves as a Big Underdog

San Francisco Giants (+146) at Atlanta Braves (-159, 7.5 O/U )

The Atlanta Braves, mired in a season long four game losing streek, scored two runs in the ninth inning last night to beat the San Francisco Giants 6-5 and improve their major league-best home record to 22-8. Right-hander Julio Teheran is the scheduled starter for Atlanta tonight. He has a 8-4 record in 2013 with a 4.00 ERA. Teheran struggled to command his fastball as he allowed two home runs and five earned runs in six innings against San Diego on Monday. This was his first start after nearly completing a no-hitter against Pittsburgh on June 5. The Braves, 8-4 in his starts, have gone over 50% of the time in those starts. His opponent on the mound will be right-hander Tim Lincecum. Lincecum has a 4.70 ERA with a 1.42 WHIP, and is 4-6 on the season. Expect Lincecum to bear down when the opposing pitcher comes to bat. In his last start, he yielded a two-run, second-inning single to Pittsburgh’s Gerrit Cole, which precipitated San Francisco’s defeat.

“I kind of put myself in some holes with some pitches that weren’t really even close to the zone,” Lincecum said. “I really wasn’t challenging the zone with quality strikes. When I did throw quality strikes, they put them in play and hurt us.” The Giants are 7-6 in games started by him, and have gone over 62% of those games.

Forecasts are calling for 82°F temperatures with winds blowing in at 4 mph. The humidity will be around 58%. There is a 20% chance of precipitation.
